LNG, FSRU, STS & Offshore — explained

Four terms come up constantly across Greenport's services. Here's what each one actually means, how the process works, and why it matters operationally — in plain language, not just a definition.

01 · LNG

What is LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas)?

LNG is natural gas — mostly methane — that has been cooled to about −162°C (−260°F) until it turns into a liquid. In liquid form it takes up roughly 1/600th of the volume it would as a gas, which is what makes it practical to load onto a ship and move across oceans instead of through a pipeline.

From wellhead to your pipeline

The same gas molecule goes through all of these stages before it reaches a home or power plant on the other side of the ocean.

Why turn gas into a liquid at all?

  • Shrinking the volume ~600 times is what makes ocean transport by ship practical at all.
  • It reaches markets that have no pipeline connection to a gas-producing region.
  • Cargo can be redirected to whichever buyer needs it, ship by ship — pipelines can't do that.
  • It's stored at low pressure in heavily insulated cryogenic tanks, not high pressure.

02 · FSRU

What is an FSRU (Floating Storage and Regasification Unit)?

An FSRU is a ship — usually a converted or purpose-built LNG carrier — that stays moored in one place and does the job of an entire onshore import terminal: it receives LNG, stores it, and turns it back into gas before sending it ashore through a pipeline. It's a terminal that floats instead of one built on land.

An FSRU doesn't remove the need for independent oversight — if anything it concentrates storage, transfer and regasification on one hull, which is exactly what our GMAD platform and Marine Assurance team are built to monitor.
03 · STS

What is Ship-to-Ship (STS) Transfer?

STS is exactly what it sounds like: two vessels come alongside each other — at anchor, underway, or in a sheltered area — and cargo is transferred directly from one to the other, without either ship ever touching a fixed jetty or terminal.

When it's used

  • Loading or discharging where there's no fixed jetty available
  • Splitting cargo from a large LNG carrier into smaller vessels for regional distribution
  • Supplying an FSRU that isn't connected to a jetty
  • Reducing port congestion by transferring cargo at anchorage instead of berth

04 · OFFSHORE

What does "Offshore" mean here?

"Offshore" is the umbrella term for any operation that happens out at sea rather than at a fixed onshore facility. In the LNG world, that covers a specific set of assets and activities — not a single thing, but a category.

Every one of these sits outside a conventional onshore terminal's fence line — which is precisely why Greenport exists as an independent layer: no single owner, shipyard or operator has visibility across all of it on their own.
05 · MARINE TERMINALS

What is a marine terminal?

A marine terminal is the physical facility where a vessel actually moors to load or discharge cargo — the berths, jetties and equipment that connect the ship to the shore, or to another floating unit. Every other term on this page eventually passes through one.

An FSRU is essentially a floating marine terminal. An STS transfer is a cargo operation that deliberately happens without one. And every cargo of LNG passes through a marine terminal at both ends of its journey — loading and regasification. See LNG Marine Operations & Assurance.
